At the age of 16, Sterenn Facon knew she wanted to influence business decisions. Through business analytics, information systems, management accounting, her focus has always been clear – provide key information and insight to the business to underpin business decisions.
Her 16-year management accountancy career began in her home country of France, where she worked for Bosch, Bacardi-Martini and Le Gouessant in ‘traditional’ finance roles. Together with her partner, they made the decision to move to Scotland in 2008, soon after she joined Finance & Data Operations in Shell Business Operations (SBO) Glasgow.
No stranger to studying, Sterenn has two Masters’ degrees and is a Six Sigma green belt. To progress her finance career in the UK, she successfully studied the CIMA Professional Qualification within two-years, earning her ACMA, CGMA designation and the opportunity to move into a senior position before becoming a team leader and then taking on her greatest role of all – becoming a mum.
Nearly 2 years ago, Sterenn has become a Governance, Risk and Assurance senior analyst, an integral role in a complex shared services organisation. Expert in the delegation of authority process, involved in assessing the effectiveness of the Control Framework, supporting Internal Audits, she is part of a team of 15 people based around the world from Glasgow to Chennai, and reports in to a business services manager in Krakow.
As a finance business partner, she also has a dotted line in to a business manager in the Netherlands, who is responsible for the application of the Shell Control Framework in the Project and Technology and Global Functions organization.
She said of her reasons for studying the Certificate in GBS,
When work moves from on-shore to off-shore there can be a natural feeling of uncertainty and lack of clarity as to who does what. So when I heard about the Certificate in Global Business Services, I knew that even though I was already eight years in to my shared services career, it was exactly the logical qualification I needed to help me pull together and reinforce everything I had learned and experienced in shared services so far.
And on how the qualification has helped her specifically in her role?
I now know more precisely where I sit within Shell Business Operations and Shell as a whole . I am more clear about what this means, the boundaries of what I am responsible for and more confident on how best to partner and support the business.
